The Great Hall
The function of the Great Hall is to provide a facility whereby degree ceremonies can be held and accommodate seating for over 800 in the hall itself with additional seating in the balconies for 80 people. Over 100 chairs can be sighted on the main stage and additional seating in the wings to complete the maximum complement.
The brief was to update the seating into a contemporary yet elegant area used for various ceremonies including concerts that are offered by the Philharmonic Orchestra.
The seating had to be comfortable and practical in that it had to be flexible enough to be set out to suit each application and stored when not required. The fact that the chairs sit on a mobile trolley when stored and can stack 32 high was a major benefit to the University particularly in regard to the minimised area required to store 1100 chairs.
The finish in Black Hide offers an environmental organic approach (from a sustainable source) and the Chrome frame is of the highest standard and sourced from the Dutch manufacturer Casala.
To accommodate 1100 chairs a partnered approach was adopted by the University and the Estates Dept worked with the company to provide a modern and flexible result that offers a venue capable of hosting large events in single room, there is flexible stage and excellent acoustics for concerts etc.
